AIRWAY FOCUSED PHYSICAL THERAPY
You do not have to live with chronic [fill in the blank] pain, poor breathing habits, and interrupted sleep
Myofunctional Therapy & Sleep ...and immunity
Obstructive Sleep Apnea (OSA) is a potentially serious health disorder characterized by interruptions in breathing during the night. A medical doctor, preferably a sleep physician, can diagnose and prescribe treatment for OSA. It was previously thought of as an ailment that affects older populations, but recent studies have shown that OSA affects and negatively impacts the lives of all age groups.
According to scholarly research, Myofunctional Therapy (MFT) can improve the lives and the well-being of those suffering from OSA. Here is an excerpt from the "Nature and Science of Sleep" publication: "Orofacial myofunctional therapy (OMT) is a modality of treatment for children and adults with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) to promote changes in the musculature of the upper airways. The studies reviewed reveal that several benefits of OMT were demonstrated in adults, which include significant decrease of apnea– hypopnea index (AHI), reduced arousal index, improvement in subjective symptoms of daytime sleepiness, sleep quality, and life quality. In children with residual apnea, OMT promoted a decrease of AHI, increase in oxygen saturation, and improvement of orofacial myofunctional status."
The most immediate and current treatment for OSA is either a CPAP or a BiPAP machine. While we concur that CPAP or BiPAP offer an immediate relief to OSA, we also recognize that BiPAP and CPAP are aimed at treating the symptoms of OSA without looking at the root cause of the issue. Additionally, many individuals with OSA are unable to tolerate a CPAP mask, feeling claustrophobic and uncomfortable. With Myofunctional Therapy and our network of medical and dental providers, we will provide you with a comprehensive and potentially curative treatment plan that will address your CPAP intolerance and ensure that the root of cause of your sleep disorder is treated in the most integrative and collaborative way.
